  • Statement:
  • I once read somewhere that landscape paintings are the most popular subject for art collectors to buy. After reading this, I remember pondering why this is so. Many times I have seen a painted landscape of a favorite place I have been that didn't quite capture the awe and wonder of actually being there. I believe that the best the artist can do is to capture the gestalt or the essence of the landscape, but the artist cannot actually take you there. However, I have often noticed how a near- or completely- abstract work of art can transform the room in which it is hung; thus creating a new sort of landscape -- a more cerebral one that is ready for interpretation. I am interested in how much and what type of information a viewer needs in order to "see" a landscape. My art would look a lot different if I did not own a computer that has the internet. I am a hoarder of information -- I feel the need to download and listen to every song that has ever been written, to see every painting that has ever been painted, or to read every book that has ever been written. I can't get enough, yet there is no way that my brain can remember all of this information. So what I do is try to create cohesiveness from this jumble of ideas. In the end, however, one can say that what I have created is in fact a landscape. This landscape is based on the beauty I have seen in nature, dreams I have had, and the vastness of the information super highway. I have become increasingly interested in the potential of digital art. I began by creating digital “sketches,” or studies, for my acrylic paintings. This resulted in my art “tightening” up quite a bit. So I started drawing, creating finished pieces that have more of the “artist’s hand.” The drawings have the same idea as the paintings. They are more or less collaged, but it is much more improvisational than the other process. Then it occurred to me to create a synthesis of the two – images that have the structure of the paintings and the gestures of the drawings. I have been happy with the results of these digital paintings so far and am excited to see where they might take me.
