  • Artist Name:
  • PAUL RUIZ
  • Statement:
  • My work explores a continued fascination with mapping the observed and imagined human figure. I employ the human subject as a metaphor for creative inquiry where the figure is formed through experimentation, process and chance. What begins with drawing is often re-conceived directly on the canvas as I build or efface the image with rags, hands and palette knife. Observation, memory and imagination also play a key role in my studio process. For me human presence is consequently revealed, suggested or masked by this very physical and material ritual of painting over time. A practice which excavates and masks the human subject is central to my understanding of painting in a digital and media saturated age.
  • Biography:
  • Completed studies in Visual Arts at Melbourne University in 1996. Paul was engaged in technology-driven projects for over ten years across several industries whilst deepening his continued fascination with the visual analysis, drawing and painting of the human figure. After launching his first solo exhibition in November 2005, Ruiz work found eager collectors in Australia and abroad whilst represented by Red Gallery and later Jenny Port Gallery. Currently the artist's work is showcased alongside prominent emerging and mid-career artists at the newly opened Lindberg Contemporary Art gallery based in Melbourne, Australia.
