  • Statement:
  • I am an Irish artist, originally trained in textiles, and graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2005. I paint in mixed media and acrylics, using the landscape as my subject. I create small universes which are specific but subjective, containing personal events, memories, people and emotions. These can be good or bad, innocent or sinister. They are ghosts of fables and childhood tales where anything can happen. These worlds are coloured also by my interest in physics, neutrons, atoms, and particles. In my painted worlds I try to create a sense of energy: chaos, distress, madness and disarray. I want to invoke a hallucinogenic quality, describing a fantastical landscape that could be either pre-evolution or post apocalyptic. Hybrids are born, explosions occur and mutations form. There is growth and decay. My painting explores how tiny atoms can construct life, and yet hold enough power to violently destroy it. Every part of a finished canvas is alive and precious. In my painting I try to let the media interact to a degree by itself, an experiment before controlling it. I use mixed media such as papers, textiles, found objects, old comics, with acrylics and hand embroidery. Surface texture is a very important element of the work. My painting is directly affected by a neurological condition called Synaesthesia which connects colours to letters, numbers and words in the brain. Through my work I hope to inspire the viewer to think about life on both a subatomic level and a social level.
