My work is focused on the degradation of society and the breakdown of the modern family unit. I convey the social decay that I observe around me by expressing my concerns with crude human forms and broken lines. I explore aspects of psychology and philosophy.
- Biography:
- Brian Sherwin joined the myartspace team in September, 2006. Mr. Sherwin is the Senior Contributing Editor of the myartspace blog. Sherwin conducts and writes the overwhelming number of interviews for the myartspace blog. Sherwin has interviewed over 400 emerging and established artists, including: Michael Craig-Martin, James Rosenquist, Sylvia Sleigh, Thornton Willis and William T. Wiley.
Sherwin has long been interested in art and psychology. He studied psychology under the instruction of Dr. Elizabeth Rellinger while attending Illinois College-- a private liberal arts college. His keen sense of the human condition was noted by several instructors in the psychology department at IC.
Upon graduation Sherwin worked in the mental health industry serving various positions, including Qualified Mental Retardation Professional (QMRP), Qualified Human Service Professional (QHSP), Activity Instructor, and Resident Aide- rank III (RA III). During those years Sherwin had several case-loads and worked with supporting staff to rehabilitate mentally challenged individuals, including former violent offenders, suffering from mental illness.
Sherwin has noted that his experiences working with dangerous individuals-- many of whom would not have been dangerous had it not been for years of childhood and systematic abuse-- made an impact on his art. Direct experience working with the mentally challenged and ill helped Sherwin to better understand the psychological theories of Carl Jung-- another point of influence in Sherwin's art.
Sherwin's art also involves his experiences of observing broken homes and drug addiction in the community of his childhood. He was raised in a small town located in one of poorest counties in Illinois. Sherwin has described the community as "a place with 1950s charm... but the steaks have been replaced with meth."
Sherwin has exhibited in Illinois. He graduated from Illinois College in 2003 with a BA in Art. He often signs his art work 'Balhatain' or 'BAL'. Sherwin is known for his expressive use of brushwork and line.
I'm an open book. Ask.
