- Artist Name:
- Adrienne Mills
- Location:
- Washington, DC
- Statement:
- When I was five or so, one of my aunts collected lipstick, eye shadow and liner from guests at a family gathering and painted the face, legs and arms of an attendee that had lots of leg and arm exposed. Everyone got their cameras out to snap photos as she posed for the crowd. I decided I’d try it some day.
Years later, during figure painting and drawing classes, I often thought it would be more interesting to paint on people instead of paper or canvas. Finally I've gotten around to it.
The human canvases transform ordinary paint into live art. The animated art cavorts in spontaneous dance with the camera, assuming the character of its new skin. These images, souvenirs of the enigmatic conversion from being human to being art, allow a voyeuristic glimpse of the momentary metamorphosis.
- Biography:
- Adrienne Mills weaves a magical brush with her camera and her creative mind. She manages to do that not only as a photographer, but also as a curator and organizer of art events, such as the body painting events she organizes to create the human canvases that yield her unique photography.
A graduate of the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, her work has been widely exhibited in many galleries in Washington, DC including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Museum, Fraser Gallery, Anne C. Fisher Gallery, MOCA DC and many others. She has also exhibited in the Mid Atlantic region, and has built a secondary art market record through several sales via Sothebys.com.
Mills’ works deal with opening new avenues in the world of contemporary photography that include a powerful element of painting. Her models are her canvasses and her photographs are her powerful contributions to the dialogue of contemporary art.
